Our renowned weekend workshops, covering most every aspect of safe three-season backcountry travel, are designed for hikers of all levels!  You will work with our very experienced volunteer instructors in small experiential learning groups. All instructors are active trip leaders with NH Chapter AMC.  Groups are 6 - 8 participants to 2 instructors so learning is experiential, fun, and focused for you.

The weekend is loaded with learning, fun and great food from early Friday evening through 4:30PM Sunday afternoon and are conducted at Cardigan Lodge, 774 Shem Valley Road, Alexandria, NH, and  the surrounding forestst and mountains.

Choose one of Eight available workshop sessions, each filled with field exercises, instruction, lectures, and discussions.  Your time will be divided between your individual group and activities for the entire workshop and fabulous meals prepared  by  AMCNH chapter trip leaders.

You must be 18 or older to attend the workshop.  Age is used for statistical purposes only.

    • I want to sleep in my tent and attend a backpacking session.

    • I want to sleep in the lodge and attend an outdoor safety, map and compass, leadership, or trailwork session.


    • For those just getting started with mountain hiking. We will hike approximately 3.5 miles per day and spend about 5 hours outside each day. route finding, gear, food and nutrition, mountain weather

    • For those with some experience in the mountains. Expect to learn while on the trail for about 6 miles per day and up to 6 hours a day outside. route finding, gear, food and nutrition, mountain weather , How to travel in higher elevations in NH mountains.

    • Session for those who want to really learn how to use a map and compass to navigate your to any were. Learn all about maps and compass. Learn to take bearings from the map and follow them in the field . Understand and learn to do back bearings to find you present location on the landscape and on the map .

    • For those who have good three-season hiking skills and wish to enhance them and/or wish to run trips of their own. Exercises will include planning, organizing, and conducting trips with an emphasis on leadership techniques such as group decision making, handling difficult behaviors, and group dynamics. Learn by doing through outside experiential methods. Also covered will be accident scene management, medical considerations, and off-trail navigation. Plan to spend about 5 hours Saturday and 4 hours Sunday outside bushwhacking and practicing leadership and compass skills. This course is a prerequisite for those who desire to become an AMC NH Chapter Volunteer Trip Leader.

    • Start a fun weekend by learning basic trail maintenance and then moving to an advanced project. This year we will focus on Cardigan's 2023 All Persons Trail. After the trail's first real winter there are bound to be many places needing repair. Work will include moving and laying down surface material, fixing drainage problems, and maintaining access to the ski trails which branch from the All Persons Trail. Learn about what makes an "all persons" trail special. Find out about adopting a trail and participating in other AMC volunteer events. All tools provided.

      Spend a fun weekend learning basic trail maintenance and working on an advanced project. The basics: using tools safely, clearing drainage, keeping brush in check, and removing blow downs.

    • Covering the essentials of what you wanted or needed to know about Cell phone based navigation apps using GAIA GPS. Participants will need to locate GAIA GPS in the app store and download it before the work shop. This workshop will be a small group of 8 participants and 2 instructors who will spend the weekend together reviewing and learning the details of cell phone apps and linking them to map and compass skills, culminating in field exercises to include off-trail (bushwhack) navigating using this cell phone app.

In consideration of the services of the Appalachian Mountain Club, Inc., a charitable, not-for-profit corporation, organized and existing under the laws of Massachusetts, and its chapters, including all officers, employees, representatives, volunteers (including leaders and co-leaders), members and all other persons or entities associated with it (collectively referred to in this Document as 'AMC'), I acknowledge and agree as follows:
    AMC volunteer-led educational and/or recreational activities may include, but are not limited to hiking, backpacking, camping, biking, skiing, maintenance of trails and facilities, mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, use of AMC huts or other facilities and transportation or travel to and from activities (referred to in this Document as 'activities' or 'these activities'). The leaders of these activities are volunteers. They are not paid professional guides or leaders. In all activities, all participants share in the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of the group. I take responsibility for having appropriate skills, physical conditioning, equipment and supplies for these activities.
    These activities include inherent and other risks, hazards and dangers that can cause or lead to injury, property damage, illness, mental or emotional trauma, paralysis, disability or death to participant or others. I recognize that Covid -19 protocols may be in effect at the time of this training session and that the leaders of the activity or the AMC managers of the facility may require us to observe certain CDC approved Covid-19 protocols during these activities. Some, but not all of these risks, hazards and dangers include: hazardous and unpredictable ground, water or weather conditions; misjudgments made by leaders, co-leaders, participants or others; travel in remote areas that can cause delays in transportation, evacuation and medical care; equipment that can fail or malfunction; the potential that the participant or others (e.g. co-participant, driver, medical and rescue personnel) may act carelessly or recklessly. I understand that AMC staff, leaders or other personnel cannot assure participant´s safety or eliminate these risks. I am voluntarily participating with knowledge of the risks. Therefore, I assume and accept full responsibility for the inherent and other risks of these activities (both known and unknown), and for any injury, damage, death or other loss suffered by me, resulting from those risks.
    I agree to release and not to sue AMC (as AMC is defined above) in regard to all claims, liabilities, suits, or expenses (hereafter collectively ‘claim’ or ‘claims’), including claims caused or alleged to be caused by the negligence of AMC (but not its gross negligence or intentional or reckless misconduct), for any injury, damage, death or other loss to me in any way connected with my participation in these activities, or my use of AMC equipment or facilities. I understand I agree here to waive all claims I may have against AMC, and agree that neither I, nor anyone acting on my behalf, will make a claim or file a lawsuit against AMC.
    I agree that the substantive laws of Massachusetts govern this Document and all other aspects of my relationship with AMC, and that any mediation, suit, or other proceeding must be filed or entered into only in Massachusetts. Any portion of this Document deemed unlawful or unenforceable shall not affect the remaining provisions, and those remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
